A Kenyan police officer shot and killed six people in a drug-trafficking sting on the outskirts of the capital city of Nairobi, Kenyan authorities said Saturday.
The officer entered Nairobi’s Soweto slum on Friday night armed with an assault rifle and a revolver, police said in a statement.
At about 11 p.m., “a police officer turned up at the designated police post of SAFE KENYA Limited and attempted to disarm several officers before opening fire on them,” the statement said.
Kenyan police have put up roadblocks in an area near Kibera slum where they suspect heroin trafficking is taking place.
Five police officers were wounded in the shooting, and three of them were transferred to a hospital after being airlifted, according to police.
A number of suspects were arrested, police said.
It was not immediately clear if any arrests had been made.
Kenya has a history of drug-related crimes. Drug gangs have been blamed for a string of killings and attacks in Nairobi’s slums.
